Masks: Columbina

Patience, please - this page is under construction.

This simple eyemask, named for the Columbina of the Commedia del'Arte tradition, has become the standard for this initially maskless character. Our Columbina covers all or most of the nose with a slightly curved line across the face, reaching just low enough to accent the cheekbones with a sudden upward swoop into back-angled gently pointed temples. The gently arched browline reaches up to hide the eyebrows, but little more. The eyeholes are delicately contoured to accentuate the shape of the eyes.

Though based on a female character, Columbina made for an excellent unisex mask, and is available with masculine "Arleccino" eyeholes if preferred at no charge. (A pair of matched Columbina masks with these slightly varied details make wonderful Couples' masks - of course, Columbina and Arleccino - Harlequin - were lovers.)

Columbina is available in a remarkable array of painted or carved designs. Anything you can dream up can be available, from the most simple in a single color, to the most complex featuring elaborate dimensional paint or unique carving and tooling. Even as this gallery page expands with scores of examples of decorative designs, the page will hardly begin scratch the surface of the potential variety. For other variations on the Columbina, see Les Petits.

To picture every available permutation of this design would be an impossible task, and would sadly exclude your own ideas. Please do not hesitate to send a note if you have an idea and would like a quote or to discuss a design. The following may be used as a guide to an estimate.
